Moonrise Book Club
We’re so excited to get this book club started. It’s open to anyone whether or not you’re a Moonrise client. The anticipated plan/format is as follows.
Book Club Format
Each month will consist of two options for reading:
📚A non-fiction. Think memoir, birthy book, or justice oriented.
and we’ll alternate between:
📚A cozy, light hearted fiction. Think cozy fantasy, or contemporary rom-com.
📚And a more “serious” fiction option. Think lit fic, or epic fantasy.
If none of the books sound good, or if you’re a mood reader, just bring whatever book you’re moving through.
The actual meetings will run a bit like a silent book club. 15 minutes of chatting, where you can introduce yourself, tell folks about what you’re reading, and catch up with folks who are maybe reading the same thing you are. Then we’ll have 45-60 minutes of quiet reading and then 15 minutes to wrap up share about any exciting updates with what you just read, being mindful for spoilers and the other folks who are reading what you’re reading.
July’s Book Club Picks
Non-fiction Pick: Birth Vibes by Jen Hamilton
The delivery room decoded—by the internet’s favorite labor nurse.
“I highly recommend Birth Vibes for pregnant women who plan to have hospital births.”—Ina May Gaskin, CPM
Childbirth is one of life’s most powerful experiences—but it can also be overwhelming. Too often, expecting parents are prompted to create their perfect “birth plan,” only to feel disappointed or even traumatized if things go differently. That’s where Jen Hamilton comes in.
A labor and delivery nurse, ER veteran, and mom herself, Jen has been a steady presence at thousands of births (and on millions of screens). In Birth Vibes she uses both humor and heart, sharing her own stories to guide readers expectations about what happens in the delivery room. Instead of unyielding checklists, she encourages parents to learn their birth vibes—a blend of values and vision—which unlock the tools to advocate for the personalized care they need.
Birth Vibes is the ultimate companion for anyone preparing to give birth—or supporting someone who is. Warm, funny, and deeply grounded in real-life experience, this is the guide every parent deserves: allowing them adapt to whatever birth brings with confidence and calm.
Fiction Pick: First Time Caller by B.K. Borison
A hopeless romantic meets a demoralized radio host in this cozy, Sleepless in Seattle–inspired love story from beloved author B.K. Borison.
Aiden Valentine has a secret: he’s fallen out of love with love. And as the host of Baltimore’s romance hotline, that’s a bit of a problem. But when a young girl calls in to the station asking for dating advice for her mom, the interview goes viral, thrusting Aiden and Heartstrings into the limelight.
Lucie Stone thought she was doing just fine. She has a good job; an incredible family; and a smart, slightly devious kid. But when all of Baltimore is suddenly scrutinizing her love life—or lack thereof—she begins to question if she’s as happy as she thought. Maybe a little more romance wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
Everyone wants Lucie to find her happy ending…even the handsome, temperamental man calling the shots. But when sparks start to fly behind the scenes, Lucie must make the final call between the radio-sponsored happily ever after or the man in the headphones next to her.
